Sig. Hoibakke, Victoria, 1962

A good sounding viola by Sig. Hoibakke, a self-taught violin maker and machinist who
came to Victoria from Norway after World War II. He was an important maker in our
area in the 1950’s and 60’s. This is the only viola we have seen from him.
According to a family member who is still the original owner,
this instrument was left unfinished when the maker died in 1962.
The family had it varnished by Rino Righele, a maker in Vancouver, BC.
