Seven-string Bass Viol in “D”

Constructed in 1990 in Victoria, BC, Canada by Hugh M. Sutherland.
Total length 125 cm, scale length 675 mm.
Decoratively purfled big-leaf maple back and plain sides. Sitka
spruce front. Head of blind-folded woman. Back of pegbox
with carved street scene. Gut frets. Rosewood fingerboard.
Ebony pegs. Rosewood hookbar and tailpin. Hookbar has inset
carved scene of a gamba player. With brazilwood bow and padded
bag.

Treble Viol in “D”

Constructed in 1973 in Sidney, BC, Canada by Hugh M. Sutherland.
Total length 67 cm, scale length 353 mm.
Big-leaf maple back and sides. Sitka spruce front, unpurfled rosewood
fingerboard and pegs. Boxwood hookbar and tailpin carved with cherubs
playing trumpets, monogram “W” and a heron. Back of pegbox carved with
vine and flower motif. Violin style scroll with Brazilwood bow and
plywood case.

German Treble Viol in “D”

Constructed in 1964, a collaborative piece from the Upmann Workshops of
Wilhelm Uebel, Celle, Germany.
Total length 70 cm, scale length 362 mm.
Maple back and sides, simple scroll. Small opening in back centre
joint. Rosewood fingerboard and hookbar. Two “C” holes and piercework
rosette with Brazilwood bow and plywood case.
